March 8, 2012

Ian Spalter
VP Product Design | VP Product Design | R/GA New York

So you think your work is innovative and you are really challenging the very definition of what it means to work in our field today? Think again. You don’t want to miss this unique opportunity to meet our guest speaker for March. Ian Spalter is the VP of Product Design at R/GA. Working primarily on the Nike account, Ian focuses on creating digital products and services that influence behavior across desktop, mobile, social, and other emerging platforms. It is time to think beyond unidirectional communications, and trying to connect with an audience through single-minded, traditional means. Ian has been able to eliminate the boundaries between all media to maximize the power of thoughtfully designed experiences that can trully resonate with his client’s audiences. Think Walmart, Pepsi, AVAYA, Verizon, Lancome, and a long etcetera of some of the world’s leading brands. The game is changing and Ian Spalter (R/GA, New York) is one that is leading the field to new and exciting places for all of us.

Sonnenzimmer: Images and Concepts from Chicago

Sonnenzimmer is a Chicago-based art and screen printing studio run by Nadine Nakanishi and Nick Butcher. The couple merges backgrounds in typography, printmaking, graphic design and fine art to create hand-crafted posters, books, music packaging and illustration. Working closely with Chicago’s bustling free jazz community, Sonnenzimmer has found a place where experimentation and abstraction are both respected and demanded. This freedom has allowed them to work through countless ideas and styles, shaping their visual language, one that is simultaneously quiet and bold. Their work has been exhibited internationally and recently locally at the Museum of Contemporary Art Chicago. Some of their past projects have been published in books by Gestalten, Princeton Architectural Press, Juxtapoz, Pepin Press, and Rockport Publishers.

Snow Blocked

So, sometimes these things happen. Due to snowy weather, John Bielenberg is currently stuck on the east coast and will not be speaking tonight. But don’t worry, we have a back-up plan. We still plan on having a meeting tonight. Same time, same place. Stop by Living Arts tonight to pick up your block for Block Party, sign up for half-price membership, or just talk some shop about the Tulsa Brand and hang out with your favorite ADCT pals. And although John can’t make it to talk this season, he’ll be gearing up to kick off the next ADCT season in September.

JOHN BIELENBERG
What John does best is help companies and their people, find the courage and the sense of humor to consider whole new, wrong ways of bringing their stories, ideas, and innovations out into the world.

John feels so strongly about the value of thinking wrong that he created a program called Project M that is designed to inspire and educate young designers, writers, photographers, and filmmakers by proving that their work—especially their wrongest thinking—can have a positive and significant impact on the world. Project M has developed projects to help a conservation area in Costa Rica, Micro-financing in Ghana, New Orleans after Katrina, the community of East Baltimore, connecting households to fresh water in Hale County Alabama and addressing the the BP oil spill in the Gulf of Alabama.

Most recently, John has partnered with Alex Bogusky and Rob Schuham to form COMMON, a new brand of capitalism that replaces competitive advantage with collaborative advantage. John, Alex and Rob believe that benefiting people, communities, society, the environment and future generations is the new advantage in business.

In his career, John has won more than 250 design awards, was nominated for 2 National Design Awards from the Cooper-Hewitt Museum, served on the AIGA National Board of Directors, and teaches at California College of the Arts in San Francisco. The San Francisco Museum of Modern Art has acquired six of his projects and staged a solo exhibition in 2000. In addition, John was awarded the Skandalaris Award for Design Entrepreneurship from Washington University in St. Louis in 2009 and was granted an honorary doctorate degree from Maryland Institute College of Art in 2011.
