Paul Shaw is a designer and a design historian. For three decades he has researched and written about the history of graphic design with a focus on typography, lettering and calligraphy. He was the co-curator, with Peter Bain, of the groundbreaking exhibition Blackletter: Type and National Identity. Recently, Shaw wrote the acclaimed Helvetica and the New York City Subway System (2009).

Shaw’s work has won awards from the Type Directors Club, AIGA, New York Art Directors Club, Print and Letter Arts Review. From 1992 to 2001, he was a partner with Garrett Boge in the digital typefoundry LetterPerfect. He has designed or co-designed 18 typefaces, among them Kolo, Donatello, Bermuda, Old Claude and Stockholm.

As a contributing editor for Print, Shaw co-writes the magazine’s Stereotypes column. In 2008 he established Blue Pencil, a blog dedicated to research and education about topics in graphic design history, typography and lettering. He has a BA in American Studies from Reed College and both an MA and an MPhil in American History from Columbia University.

Sonnenzimmer: Images and Concepts from Chicago

Sonnenzimmer is a Chicago-based art and screen printing studio run by Nadine Nakanishi and Nick Butcher. The couple merges backgrounds in typography, printmaking, graphic design and fine art to create hand-crafted posters, books, music packaging and illustration. Working closely with Chicago’s bustling free jazz community, Sonnenzimmer has found a place where experimentation and abstraction are both respected and demanded. This freedom has allowed them to work through countless ideas and styles, shaping their visual language, one that is simultaneously quiet and bold. Their work has been exhibited internationally and recently locally at the Museum of Contemporary Art Chicago. Some of their past projects have been published in books by Gestalten, Princeton Architectural Press, Juxtapoz, Pepin Press, and Rockport Publishers.

So, sometimes these things happen. Due to snowy weather, John Bielenberg is currently stuck on the east coast and will not be speaking tonight. But don’t worry, we have a back-up plan. We still plan on having a meeting tonight. Same time, same place. John feels so strongly about the value of thinking wrong that he created a program called Project M that is designed to inspire and educate young designers, writers, photographers, and filmmakers by proving that their work—especially their wrongest thinking—can have a positive and significant impact on the world. Project M has developed projects to help a conservation area in Costa Rica, Micro-financing in Ghana, New Orleans after Katrina, the community of East Baltimore, connecting households to fresh water in Hale County Alabama and addressing the the BP oil spill in the Gulf of Alabama.

Most recently, John has partnered with Alex Bogusky and Rob Schuham to form COMMON, a new brand of capitalism that replaces competitive advantage with collaborative advantage. John, Alex and Rob believe that benefiting people, communities, society, the environment and future generations is the new advantage in business.

In his career, John has won more than 250 design awards, was nominated for 2 National Design Awards from the Cooper-Hewitt Museum, served on the AIGA National Board of Directors, and teaches at California College of the Arts in San Francisco. The San Francisco Museum of Modern Art has acquired six of his projects and staged a solo exhibition in 2000. In addition, John was awarded the Skandalaris Award for Design Entrepreneurship from Washington University in St. Louis in 2009 and was granted an honorary doctorate degree from Maryland Institute College of Art in 2011.
